We are sharing a series to help you get to know the Village's water system. This week we are looking at water treatment.

Part 3: Lytton's water treatment system

Before the Village of Lytton distributes water from its sources to the taps of residents and businesses, the Village uses two water treatment processes:

  1. Trojan Swift low-pressure ultraviolet (UV) light reactors
  2. Chlorination within 345 reservoirs

UV light reactors inactivate microorganisms, such as viruses, bacteria, and protozoa (which can all cause illnesses), while chlorine helps to:

  • Kill bacteria and viruses
  • Oxidize some mineral, taste, and odour compounds
  • Remove colour
  • Assist with other water treatment processes
  • Keep water clear

The Village of Lytton follows Interior Health’s Drinking Water Treatment Objectives listed in the Drinking Water in Interior Health Report. Water treatment and testing help to ensure that Lytton's water tastes good and is safe to drink.

Trained and certified operators maintain the Village of Lytton’s water system and treatment facilities. The Village is currently upgrading to an automated SCADA system, which will continuously monitor water quality and help the operators make necessary adjustments.
