General voting day for the 2026 local election is October 17, 2026.

There is also an advance voting day on October 7, 2026.

Who you will vote for

In the Village of Lytton, voters will elect:

• 1 mayor
• 4 councillors
• 1 school trustee for School District No. 74

Why vote?

The decisions made by your local Council shape everyday life in the Village of Lytton. Voting in the local general election is your chance to have a say in community priorities, local services, and the future of the Village. When you vote, you:

• Help choose leaders who represent your community and your interests
• Influence local decisions that affect services, infrastructure, and amenities
• Make a difference, especially in small communities, where every vote counts! 

In British Columbia, there are two types of eligible voters in local elections:

• Resident electors
• Non-resident property electors

Resident electors

To be eligible vote as a resident elector in the Village of Lytton, you must:

• be 18 years of age or older
• be a Canadian citizen
• have lived in British Columbia for at least six months before voting
• live in the Village of Lytton 
• not be disqualified by law from voting

If you are an eligible elector without a fixed address or residing in a tiny home or RV without a residential address, you may still register to vote as a resident elector in the local government where you usually reside.

If you live on one of the First Nation reserves outside of the Village of Lytton and located in the Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD), Electoral Area “I”, you would vote in the TNRD general local election.

Non-resident property electors

If you live in one jurisdiction but own property in one or more jurisdictions (such as the Village of Lytton), you may vote in each of the other jurisdictions where you own property, as long as you meet the voter eligibility requirements.

 A non-resident property elector must:

• be 18 years of age or older 
• be a Canadian citizen
• have lived in British Columbia for at least six months before registering to vote 
• be a registered owner of property in the Village of Lytton for at least 30 days before registering to vote 
• not be eligible to vote as a resident elector in Lytton 
• not be disqualified by law from voting

A person may register as a non-resident property elector only in relation to one parcel of real property in the Village of Lytton.  If you own multiple parcels in the Village, you can only register once and vote once.

If a property has more than one owner:

• only one owner may vote as the non-resident property elector
• that individual must have written consent from the majority of the property owners

A person cannot vote on behalf of a corporation, or as a non-resident property elector, based on property owned wholly or in part by a corporation or trust

Register or update voter information as a resident elector

There are 2 ways for residents to register for voting:

1. Elections BC maintains the voters’ list for the Village and provincial elections. Register or update your voter information with Elections BC  by August 18, 2026, or
2. Register with the Village of Lytton at the time of voting (on the advance voting day or voting day).

Identification required for voting

To register at the advance voting day or voting day, you need to show 2 pieces of eligible identification. Together, they must show your:

• Name on both pieces
• Address on at least 1 piece
• Signature on at least 1 piece

You may make a solemn declaration about where you live, if neither piece of identification shows your residential address.

Register as a non-resident property elector

Advance registration is encouraged for non-resident property electors.

There are 3 ways to register as a non-resident property elector:

1. Register in advance at the Village Office. The deadline for advance registration is August 25, 2026. 
2. Register at the time of voting (on the advance voting day or voting day).
3. Register when applying to vote by mail (starting September 22, 2026). 

To apply, you will need to:

• Complete an application for registration as a non-resident property elector and consent of registered owners form (if there are multiple owners).
• Provide 2 pieces of identification:
  • Both must show your name
  • 1 must include your address
  • 1 must include your signature
• Provide proof of ownership of your Village of Lytton property (such as property tax notice, assessment notice, or certificate of title).

If there are other owners of the property in question, you must also have written consent from the majority of all the owners stating that you are the one owner who is designated as the non-resident (property) elector for that property. 

Non-resident electors can vote only once, regardless of the number of properties they own. Property registered in company/corporation names do not qualify under the Local Government Act to vote in municipal elections.

There are 3 ways to vote:

1. General voting day
2. Advance voting day
3. Mail ballot voting

General voting day

General voting day is on Saturday, October 17, 2026, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Kumsheen ShchEma-meet School (365 Highway 1, Lytton, BC).

Advance voting day

There is also an advance voting day on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Kumsheen ShchEma-meet School (365 Highway 1, Lytton, BC)

Mail ballot voting

Mail ballot voting is an option for eligible electors to register to vote and cast a ballot by mail, rather than attending a polling station in person to vote at the advance voting or general voting day.

All eligible voters may request to vote by mail.

• Apply between September 22 and October 15, 2026, for a package to be mailed to you.
• We must receive your completed ballot by the close of voting on October 17, 2026, at 8 p.m.

You cannot cast a ballot in the local election over the phone or internet.

The Village of Lytton is required to make voting places as accessible as reasonably possible. This means providing options for eligible electors:

• Assistance receiving a ballot ("curb-side" voting): if you travel to the voting place and cannot easily access the building or room in which voting is taking place, an election official may bring you a ballot.
• Assistance marking a ballot: if you are unable to mark your own ballot, another person, such as an election official, friend or relative, may assist you. That person will be required to sign a solemn declaration before assisting with marking the ballot.
• Translation: if you require assistance from a translator, you may bring one, as long as the translator makes a solemn declaration that they can and will translate to the best of their ability.
