The Village of Lytton has launched a voluntary vegetation management program for property owners in Lytton.
The Vegetation Management Program is designed to reduce wildfire risk by ensuring vegetation on private properties is regularly maintained throughout the high-risk summer months.
This program provides Lytton property owners with an option to sign up for municipal lawn maintenance service for an annual seasonal fee.
This year, the program will run from August 1 to October 15, 2026. In future years, the program will run from May to October.
Who is the program for?
The program is for Village of Lytton property owners, and particularly property owners who live in other communities.
What are the goals of the program?
The goals of the program are to:
- Reduce the fire hazards associated with dry grasses and other vegetation on private properties
- Support property owners to comply with the Village of Lytton’s bylaw regulating unsightly premises
- Allow the Village of Lytton to recover costs for work

What does the service include?
If you sign up and pay for the program, from August 1 to October 15, 2026, the Village will provide grass cutting and vegetation reduction services on your residential property, as required.
We estimate that this will be 2 to 3 visits during the program.
The following services are included:
- Grass cutting and vegetation reduction
- Trimming around structures, fences, and barriers
- Removal or mulching of excessive grass buildup
Program limitations:
- The program does not include tree cutting, removal or major brush clearing
- Overgrown lots may require initial cleanup at additional cost.
- Service timing may vary due to weather or fire conditions.
What is the annual fee?
If you sign up for the program, the fee for a standard residential lot is $200 per year (for an estimated 2 to 3 scheduled visits during the program period).

What are your responsibilities?
As a property owner, if you sign up for the program you need to:
- Ensure safe and clear access to the property
- Remove debris, garbage, or hazards prior to service
- Secure pets during scheduled service visits
- Identify underground hazards like sprinklers, pipes, etc.

Participation in this program helps reduce wildfire risk but does not guarantee complete FireSmart compliance.
As a property owner, you are still responsible for meeting all municipal bylaws and safety requirements.

How does the Village currently regulate unsightly premises?
The Village of Lytton regulates unsightly premises under Schedule M of Bylaw No. 663, 2012 (Consolidated). This bylaw requires property owners to maintain grass and weeds at a height that does not exceed 20.32 cm (8 inches) and to prevent the accumulation of combustible or unsightly materials.
Where properties are not maintained, the bylaw allows the Village to:
- Issue a removal order with a 30-day compliance period
- Enter the property to complete required work
- Recover costs from the property owner, including adding unpaid costs to property taxes
Currently, the Village does not have a Bylaw Enforcement Officer, so bylaw enforcement takes place on a complaint basis in partnership with the RCMP. Complaints have been on the rise in recent years as vegetation has grown back on empty Village lots.
The new vegetation management program will help to support property owners to comply with the bylaw and to more effectively mitigate wildfire risk.
