The Lifesaving Society BC & Yukon Branch recently sent correspondence to Council in support of National Drowning Prevention Week.
Every year in Canada, more than 450 people die from drowning. This year in B.C., at least 30 people have died from drowning compared to 20 in the same time period in 2025. Drowning is preventable.
Small steps can make a big difference:
- Stay with arms' reach.
- Wear a lifejacket.
- Learn to swim.
- Actively supervise children at all times.
- Do not drink alcohol when participating in aquatic activities.

In Lytton, there are additional risks from activities near or in rivers with cold water and powerful currents. The future Community Hub pool will provide a safer place for community members to cool down in the summer and learn how to swim.
