Village Update

New BC Building Code changes came into effect this week. Starting on March 10, 2025, all new building permits need to follow the updated Building Code.

The BC Building Code changes include new requirements for the following:

  • Adaptable (accessible) dwelling units
  • Seismic (earthquake) design and wind lateral load bracing design
  • Zero Carbon Step Code emission level, EL-1 (greenhouse gas emissions)

What is the BC Building Code?

The BC Building Code is the provincial regulation in British Columbia that sets the standards for safety, health, accessibility, fire, and structural protection of buildings, as well as energy and water efficiency.

It applies to new construction, building alterations, repairs, and demolitions within the province.

How does this affect you?

  • If you applied for your building permit before March 10, 2025, Village staff will review it using the previous (2018) BC Building Code.
  • If you apply (or have applied) for a building permit on or after March 10, 2025, Village staff will review it using the new (2024) BC Building Code.
