We are sharing a series to help you get to know the Village's water system. So far, we have looked at where Lytton's water sources, management, and treatment. This week we are looking at water storage and distribution.
Part 4: Water storage and distribution
The Village has the capacity to store just over 1.3 million litres in three reservoirs. This is the equivalent of a half-full Olympic-size swimming pool. In addition, the Village’s distribution system stores approximately 115,000 litres of water.
Storage capacity is important, because it is the amount of water available for normal use by residents and businesses and potentially for fighting fires.
Water is transported from storage reservoirs through a network of 6.5 km of pipes ranging in size from 50 mm to 200 mm. Connections at the property line allow residents and businesses to tap into the Village’s water system.
Since the 2021 fire, the Village has been focussed on several water infrastructure repairs, including investigating and repairing leaks in water mains. The Public Works team has also been busy connecting new construction to the water system. An in-progress capital reinvestment plan for water, sewer, and roads will help determine how the Village allocates provincial grant funding for future water system upgrades.
